Motorists Illegally Using Cycle Path During Roadworks Endanger Vulnerable Commuters

A community organization in Scotland has had to caution local drivers against misusing a designated route for pedestrians and cyclists. This comes after residents reported confronting motorists who were attempting to use the pathway as an unauthorized shortcut during highway maintenance.
The A702 in Penpont, a village in Dumfriesshire, is currently undergoing critical reconstruction and drainage upgrades, necessitating its closure. Official diversion routes have been established, directing traffic via the B729 and A76. However, the Kier, Penpont, and Tynron Development Trust (KPTDT) has observed a few drivers disregarding these instructions and instead utilizing the adjacent active travel path, which connects Penpont and Thornhill, to circumvent the detour.
The £2.3 million pathway, inaugurated in March 2024, was specifically designed to offer a safe, traffic-free 2.5-mile corridor between Penpont and Thornhill. It features a distinct separation from the main road, marked by a substantial grassy verge, fencing, and natural barriers. The trust emphasized in a public announcement that while they acknowledge the inconvenience caused by the roadworks, the path is exclusively for walking, cycling, and wheeled mobility devices such as scooters and prams. Motorized vehicles are strictly forbidden, with exceptions only for emergency services and authorized maintenance personnel. The trust stressed that using this path as a shortcut gravely endangers vulnerable individuals, including children and cyclists, and urged drivers to adhere to the marked diversions to ensure community safety.
Community leaders and residents alike have voiced their dismay and anger over this blatant disregard for safety regulations. Many have expressed disbelief at the audacity of drivers to endanger others for personal convenience. Michelle Johnston, a development officer for KPTDT, reinforced the legal prohibition against unauthorized vehicles on the path, highlighting that this restriction is crucial for the safety of all users and local wildlife. She commended community members who have actively challenged errant drivers and confirmed that additional safety measures have since been implemented to prevent further incursions. Upholding such dedicated infrastructure is vital, reflecting a collective commitment to road safety and the well-being of every community member, fostering an environment where active transportation is both accessible and secure.
